Bennett Beauty is primarily a black & white photographic project which is interspersed with color images where color is prominent and punctuates an aspect within the image. I am choosing to utilize both black and white and color for this series. I feel black and white makes the viewer focus more on the subject matter whereas color sometimes distracts the viewer. In some instances, color was too striking to be left out of certain images. The photographs in this series were taken onsite at the cosmetology and barbering school known as Bennett Career Institute, located in Washington, D.C. Most of the clientele are comprised of seniors who come throughout the morning and daytime to have hair services performed by students. Signage stating this reminder is displayed througout the shops for clients to be mindful that "All services are performed by students." On the cosmetology side, Mrs. Branch, oversees and supervises the student's work by offering suggestions and critiques the final outcome. Often times, she'll remind students that if they are not working on a client, they "should be working on a mannequin."
